Tuning your strings to a minor chord is very useful because you can switch between major and minor barre chords with just 1 finger. You can't do that in Open Major Tunings. For this reason, sometimes we call open minor tunings Cross-note tunings.

Here we tune to D Minor (or D Cross-note). The strings are tuned to notes of a D minor chord (D - F - A). When applied to 6 strings, this gives us D A D F A D:

Low D - A - D - F - A - D
