Animated The Foggy Dew tab by Anon / Traditional on guitar. So easy you'll be playing in minutes.

Here is a famous traditional Irish tune. It is excellent practice for becoming familiar with fingerpicking and integrating finger movements on the fretboard.

Each time the thumb is used to play a bass note it is actually 'telling' the listener what the 'background' chord is. It gives the melody strength. Bass guitars in bands do the same thing. Just playing the melody alone is okay, but adding bass lines can add so much more to the tune.

As a guitarist, it pays to study the bass line because very often it will tell you what the chord behind that part of the melody is likely to be. Now, if you know your chords and scales even just a little bit, you can work within those frameworks to embellish the melody lines with fewer mistakes. Understanding chords and scales removes the guesswork from guitar, and we recommend you take a look at the theory section once you are finished with the core skills series.
