Hammer On 8

Animated Hammer On 8 tab by ActionTab on guitar. So easy you'll be playing in minutes.

This exercise is from the Core Skills section on Hammers.

Here we play a fairly easy Blues-Rock riff using hammers. After the lead-in slide, there is some palm muting involved on the Low E string (2 downstrokes).

Then we pick the open A string, and hammer on at fret 2. Pick the open D string and hammer on at fret 2, before going back to palm muting the low E string again. All the notes used here are from the E pentatonic minor scale: E G A B D. And in effect, we are really picking / hammering into an E minor chord here.

At certain points we strike the D major and A major Chords for musical effect. Loop the Normal Speed version to get a good idea of the tune and the timing to aim for.

Moving between E minor, D major and A is a typical blues / rock chord progression. These chords have strong tonic relationships, so are very common in songs. From John Lee Hooker to AC/DC you'll find a great many songs use similar chord progressions!
